Occasionally I'll share a POV blog post today is such an occasion. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to celebrate a dear friend’s birthday in Vegas. And like many of you know, trips like these can sometimes throw our routines and goals completely off track.
But here’s the thing I went into this trip with a game plan. I packed protein drinks so I could stay on track with my nutrition, and I knew sleep was going to be a challenge. To prepare, I made it a priority to get extra rest in the days leading up to the trip and scheduled time for some solid naps once I returned on Sunday.
Another part of my plan? Alcohol. I knew there would be plenty of opportunities for celebratory drinks, but I also know how alcohol affects women’s bodies especially in the peri-menopausal and menopausal years that many of us are navigating here at the studio. A few quick reminders about alcohol:
Knowing all of this, and knowing my own body, I made the choice to go alcohol-free this trip. And honestly? I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything.
It’s amazing how many options there are to turn any drink into a mocktail. If you’re not familiar, a mocktail is basically a cocktail without the alcohol and let me tell you, they’re just as good (if not better!). I was able to enjoy delicious drinks, stay present in the moment, celebrate with friends, and still feel aligned with my goals.
I realize this decision isn’t easy for everyone, and I fully respect that. But for me, choosing to go alcohol-free gave me the best of both worlds: a fun celebration AND the confidence that I’m still taking care of my health.
At the end of the day, when we’re working on our fitness and wellness goals, why not give ourselves the full opportunity to experience the benefits of a strong, healthy body?
